Days and Clouds

Well shot but predictably depressing

Elsa (Margherita Buy), a middle-aged Italian with a 20-year-old daughter, has her dream come true when she receives an art-history degree. Now she can do what she’s always wanted: restore early Renaissance frescoes. Not so fast! Husband Michele (Antonio Albanese) has just been fired from his managerial position. Thus begins a dreary cycle of unemployment and lowly jobs for both of them, plus marital unhappiness and estrangement from their confused, angry daughter. Silvio Soldini’s Giorni e nuvole is competently acted and well shot but predictably depressing — not exactly the escape movie the doctor ordered from abroad for our own economic miseries.
